Which resources do I need in my team?

Often, the software vendor will bring on a dedicated project manager and team to deliver the solution. They are responsible to design, develop and install what you have bought, and will be an integral part of your implementation journey.
However, you will need a strong internal team for topics such as requirement definition, design of workflows, master data, testing, coordinating activities between end-users and the vendor, conducting trainings and user-adoption, utilizing best practices.
A functioning team on both sides vendor and customer is needed to ensure a smooth implementation.

3 Golden Rules for Picking a Winning LIMS Team

Take stock of your internal capability

LIMS projects are very time consuming and require dedicated teams on both sides (vendor and customer). However, the customer often lacks the resources as well as knowledge and experience in their internal team, and the vendor will normally not fill gaps on the customer side. It is wise to be realistic about your staff capability and the expected workload.

Define the right profiles

You will need a program manager to guide strategic LIMS implementation, manage your vendor, detail out the implementation methodology, and program organization. Secondly, a roll-out manager (functional lead) with LIMS experience can support delivery management on the customer side, coordinating QC, IZT, production, workflow and master data design, as well as testing and validation approach, training concept, and much more. Thirdly, you will need SMEs with knowledge about connecting instruments, labels and reports etc. to configure the system based on your needs, using configuration tools and/or out of the box functionality.

Leverage external expertise where necessary

You will need know-how about topics such as strategic implementation, vendor management requirement definition, design of workflows, master data, testing, coordinating activities between end-users and the vendor, conducting trainings and user-adoption, and utilizing best practices from other projects. Independent consultants can bring in long-time roll-out expertise from other LIMS projects, and a holistic view of many of those key areas.
